Special Notice for May 2021

Given the late release of rail travel information, the lack of detail and accuracy, we feel it necessary to publish what we have gleaned from many websites (often with conflicting facts), and through targeted questioning of the various constituent parts of the whole rail industry, in order for people to be able to take advantage of the easing of lockdown restrictions on their rail travel.

Mid-May normal new timetable time from Monday 17th May

Covid lockdown arrangements: Hotels open; hospitality open: few restrictions

Train service – Nb. Southbound there is no service from Oxenholme on the hour from 17:00 Mon-Friday SO. The 3 northbound WCML trains after 17:00 don’t call/don’t operate/don’t connect into Windermere

Northern Trains

Hourly frequency restored to Lakes Line, but 3-hourly with Manchester. One mid-evening service cut -20:18 ex-Oxenholme, 20:44 from Windermere. The implication for this is that 4 incoming trains do not have a connection to Windermere, and that passengers from a further 3 will also travel on the 21:17

Avanti WC

Reduced service level continues north of Preston – full service south thereof. Hourly London/Glasgow; 2-hourly Birmingham/Edinburgh

TransPennine Express

As Avanti; basically 2-hourly Manchester/Edinburgh, with a couple of additional trains to Glasgow

Generally speaking, this equates to an hourly WCML service to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, likewise from Scotland. Not all trains call at Oxenholme. There are significant gaps in service, especially between Oxenholme and Penrith. We hope that Avanti will ensure that all trains north of Preston are 11 coaches

The DfT, the TOCs and the wider rail industry expect to review passenger train timetable uplifts in September, but it looks increasingly likely that any or all actual improvements are unlikely to be in place until the normal December timetable.
