Welcome to the Lakes Line Rail User Group Website. Here you will be able to find information about the Lakes Line, details about the group, membership and much more...
The Lakes Line runs from Oxenholme station on the West Coast Main Line through the ancient market town of Kendal, and the villages of Burneside and Staveley, to the bustling town of Windermere, poised above England’s longest lake.
New trains rule!
The Lakes Line was one of the first to see Northern's new diesel trains, and very welcome they were. Our passengers once again have bright new trains with easy-entrance doorways, and also better information for passengers.
LLRUG member David Dockray photographed this 3-car unit arriving from Manchester on 22nd April 2020, to form the 0818 train to Windermere.
Early end to the franchise - and another change
On 30th January the government announced that from 1st March the franchise would be taken from Northern and put into the management of the Department for Transport's own 'operator of last resort'. LLRUG is neither for nor against nationisation or privatisation; the important thing is that the Lakes Line operator provides the proper service.
The new management lead led by Nick Donovan had hardly had time to start on the plan for improvements they were committed to producing within 100 days when things changed again. Once the Covid 19 crisis struck, rail use plummeted and all operators were making a loss. The Government then stepped in with Emergency Measures Agreement (EMA) under which a rail operator could opt to run an emergency timetable for Key Workers, and in return for this its franchise would be suspended temporarily and the Goverment would pay the actual running costs of the service, plus a maximum of 2% on top of that as management fee. When the EMA finishes Northern will go back to being run by the 'operator of last resort'.
The Group was pleased to welcome Nick Donovan as the new MD of Northern. Nick was the very successful manager of the last years of the initial Transpennine Express franchise (which finished in 2016) and got to know the Lakes Line well.
